#PrideIn this interactive talk, Dr. Paul shares her personal journey as a native Chinese speaker and immigrant who has spent years living in Hawai‘i, navigating different languages and ways of seeing, relating, and belonging.
The talk highlights regional differences within the Chinese-speaking world, among mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and northern and southern China. It examines variations in language, cultural references, daily practices, and social expectations, and shows how these patterns have evolved.
Drawing on her experiences, the session explores how these differences shape identity and influence interactions, particularly for students navigating multiple cultural backgrounds. Participants are invited to reflect, engage, and share their perspectives as the group examines stories of cultural adjustment, identity, and connection.
The session aims to foster deeper understanding and offer meaningful ways to connect with students from diverse backgrounds with greater sensitivity, empathy, and respect.
