Join an open class of CHI-221, Chinese Aesthetics through Music, for a special program by guest artist Liling Shen. Shen is a renowned Pipa Artist, Performer, and Dedicated Educator, a graduate of the Traditional Chinese Music Department at the Wuhan Conservatory of Music, Liling Shen specialized in pipa performance and went on to serve as a pipa soloist with the National Orchestra of the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater. Since immigrating to the United States in the 1990s, she has remained an active performer while passionately promoting and teaching the pipa.

At this event, Professor Shen will present representative works from the traditional pipa repertoire, showcasing the instrument’s expressive depth and technical virtuosity. The performance will be followed by an engaging discussion that explores how the pipa’s distinctive aesthetic reflects core philosophical principles in Chinese culture.
