This event is co-sponsored by the Gay Johnson McDougall Center for Global Diversity and Inclusion and the Center for Teacher, Learning and Professional Development. This event will be a talk given by a guest speaker, Doctora Nicole Cabrera Salazar (she/they).In this talk, Dra. Nicole Salazar will discuss how transforming college classrooms into collective spaces can improve outcomes for all students, inspired by lessons from the Zapatistas. More specifically, they will examine how most American university classrooms have a vertical power structure in which the professor holds all the power, and students have no say in how they learn. Traditional expectations about how grades are earned create a classroom environment in which students are competing against each other. However, this model does not take into account the differences in student experiences and identities, often leaving the most marginalized students behind.
