Dances of Iraq w/ Dr. Autumn Cockrell-Abdullah This movement workshop and lecture will engage students in learning about a few of the many and diverse dances of Iraq including “Chobi” (line dance), “Kawleeya” style dance, and Kurdish “Sepehi” (line dance) . Taken from her own experiences in the field in Iraq and the U.A.E., Dr. Autumn Cockrell-Abdullah will share the historical roots and cultural context of these dances and will teach favored combinations as they are being performed in contemporary settings. Iraqi “Chobi” dance is a vibrant and energetic traditional dance, particularly popular in communities all over Iraq. Dancers typically form a circle or line, showcasing coordinated movements that include foot stomps, hops, and spins. The dance is characterized by its lively rhythm, often accompanied by traditional instruments like the daf and zurna. “Kawleeya” originates with Dom/Domari (known colloquially as “gypsy”) groups in Iraq but also in the area known as the Persian/Arabian Gulf. The dance movements include sharp quick shoulder shimmies, poly-rhythmic clapping, and dynamic footwork. “Sepehi” typically features a line of dancers holding hands or linking arms, moving in sync to lively music. The steps are usually simple, involving a mix of side-to-side movements, turns, and hops, allowing people of all ages to participate. You do not need any dance experience to participate but you may want a supportive athletic shoe!
