About this Event
141 East College Avenue, Decatur, GA 30030
Under the baton of Dr. Qiao Chen Solomon, the Agnes Scott Community Orchestra (ASCCO) is the largest instrumental ensemble on campus. The orchestra consists of ASC students, community musicians, and ASC artist affiliates dedicated to rehearsing and performing a high standard of orchestral repertoire representing a wide range of styles. The college-community nature of the ensemble size provides a valuable orchestral experience for instrumentalists from a variety of musical backgrounds and interests.
The theme of this semester's concert is "Legacy: A Concert of Diverse American Composers". The orchestra will perform George Gershwin's masterpiece, Rhapsody in Blue. Rhapsody in Blue occupies a special place in American music: it introduced jazz to classical concert audiences and simultaneously made an instant star of its composer, George Gershwin. From its instantly recognizable opening whine in the clarinet through its brilliant finale, Rhapsody in Blue epitomizes the Gershwin sound and instantly transforms the 25-year-old songwriter from Tin Pan Alley into a composer of “serious” music.
Please join ASC Community Orchestra in a performance of this masterpiece in celebration of the composition's 100th anniversary as well as other phenomenal music by diverse American Composers Derek Zhao, William Grant Still, Julius Williams, and Aaron Copeland. This event is admission-free and open to the public. For more information please contact music@agnesscott.edu.
